About me:

Art has always been an important aspect to my life as I find that the processes are both inspirational and calming. As a hobby I enjoy using my sewing and crochet skills to make items of clothing. My ambition is to utilise these skills further and develop them into my chosen career as a costume designer for film or theatre. Film has been an important inspiration to me and initiated my curiosity about the role costumes play in portraying a character and how they impact the overall aesthetic of the production. I am keen to expand my knowledge of the development process from concept to realisation of a costume and gain understanding of how departments collaborate to create an outcome. To support the skills, I already have in sewing and crochet I am looking forward to advancing my pattern cutting and fabric knowledge. I enjoy illustration and like to include observational drawings in my projects and would like the opportunity to explore life drawing further. In addition to furthering my creative skills, I am interested in the history of costume and keen to develop my analytical research skills. I enjoy building controversial taboo concepts into my projects such as IVF and food waste which I have explored in recent projects.

I independently opt to base my projects on costume design to help expand my knowledge of the industry. To support this, I have become a member of the V&A museum: visiting multiple times to study the costume and fashion exhibits and to extend my knowledge. This research has significantly expanded my understanding of the design process for costume and it has assisted me in developing my own pieces for my course. For example, my modern-day Lady Macbeth piece that has roots in punk culture. I was selected to participate in the BFI Film Academy course at Pinewood studios where I was appointed the role of art director - responsible for the costume, props and set in a short film. This opportunity gave me an introduction to how the industry works and emphasised how important collaboration is to achieve strong outcomes. I gained valuable experience and insight and realise that to be successful in the industry - particularly with costume - your experience, creativity, and ability to work as a team is essential. In my course at college, I have enjoyed being part of multiple group projects where I have observed that I often take a leadership role as I am good at organisation and communicating with others. In Addition to these experiences, I have also completed work experience in the Royal Spa Centre Theatre in Leamington Spa where I worked closely with the wardrobe department. The costume designer gave me an overview of the process of designing a costume for a character and how the costume can affect a character’s performance and personality.

I enjoy all aspects of the arts and I’m always enthusiastic to learn and teach myself new skills, for example in lockdown, I taught myself to crochet from scratch and progressed to creating my own designs and have gone on to sell my work to others. Doing this has been a great experience and taught me to budget, organize my time and work to a client brief. I like to keep myself busy and to date I participate in Girl Guides where I have achieved my Baden Powell award– teaching me about standing up for myself, life skills, being adventurous and teamwork. I am a keen horse rider and through this have learned determination, strength and courage and how to be responsible and care for an another being.  I enjoy taking part in the art community and I have entered various competitions such as being part of a group of young artists from Artspiration School of Art and in 2018 where we won the David Shepherd Gold Award. In 2019 I submitted my artwork and was awarded a RBWM Arts Bursary and recently I entered the Royal Academy Youth Summer Exhibition.
